Outreach

Asides offering tours and trainings to teachers and students through high school, Marsh Botanical Garden engages the community via our affiliated professors and students in different outreaches as a way of engaging the public in participation and community science.  Some of our outreach platforms include Creature Cast, The Green Cafe, TREE Maps, and Community science. Our outreach programs provides innovative explainer videos and hands-on training on plant science and horticulture to the community, both online and offline.

  • CreatureCast is a collaborative blog produced by members and students of the Dunn Lab and Edwards Lab at Yale University, along with assorted friends. This project, which is focussed on Zoology and Botany in the broad sense, serves as a forum to present original content that we have produced and observations by others that we find interesting and beautiful.
  • The Green Café is a monthly event, with an interactive presentation for plant scientists, gardeners, environmentalists and others.  Everyeone is welcome, admission is free. See our upcoming events here
  • TREE Maps: The Urban Resources Initiative (URI), a not-for-profit partnership between the Hixon Center of Urban Ecology at the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and a local board of directors, with a mission to foster community-based land stewardship, promote environmental education, advance the practice of urban forestry, and provide Yale students with clinical learning opportunities. Through their work, URI has established several maps of street trees, community greenspaces, urban tree canopy, and Yale employee milestone trees.
  • The Yale Nature Walk is an ongoing project developed in Professor Marta Wells’ course E&EB 223L: Evolution, Funtional Traits, and the Tree of Life in conjunction with Academic Technologists at the Center for Teaching and Learning. Students contributed to a collaborative map by adding information about trees on campus in a variety of forms, including basic facts, artworks, photographs, videos, etc. The growing list of trees can be found here.
